When my almost-two-year-old was diagnosed with an ear infection, the doctor took one quick look and wrote her a prescription for antibiotics. I’m definitely not opposed to antibiotics, but I do think they are over-prescribed and I would like to avoid them with my kids when they are not necessary. Since many ear infections are actually viral, I decided to wait on the antibiotics and try something at home first.
Onion also has antiviral and antibacterial properties. According to Kula Mama, and many other sources, the onion ear muff works well. Here is what Kula Mama has to say about it: “This is by far my favorite remedy for ear infections. The warmth of the onion soothes the pain almost immediately and the vapors from the onion help to fight the infection. This remedy offers a 2-for-1 punch against ear infections! To make an onion ear muff slice an onion in half and scoop out the inner layers until only the last 2-3 rings remain. Heat the onion in the oven for about 15 minutes at 300 degrees until it is warm and slightly steaming. Wrap the onion in a towel and cup it over the infected ear. Repeat as often as necessary to soothe pain.” – http://kulamama.com/holistic-remedies-for-ear-infections/
Pour about 1 cup of coarse sea salt into a solid white sock and tie a knot (or double knot) in it. Heat it on a skilled, flipping every minute or so, for about 5 minutes. The sock should be warm, but not hot. Place the sock on the ear, and the area behind the jawbone. Relax and let it sit there as long as you like. This should provide relief.
When my daughter was diagnosed with an ear infection I was currently breastfeeding my son. Breastmilk has antiviral and antibacterial properties. So I pumped milk, and put a few drops into my daughters ear. Who knows if that’s what did it, but her infection went away quickly without the antibiotics.
*If the fever isn’t too high, or causing too much discomfort, its usually okay to let it ride for a while. A fever is the body’s natural defense mechanism to fight infection. If you lower the fever, you are interfering and potentially prolonging the body killing bacteria.
*Obviously, sometimes antibiotics are needed. But if the symptoms aren’t too severe, I prefer to try out natural remedies first.
